THE DROIDS (WAS: THREEPIO)

Here is my idea, rumors have been flying that Threepio will be "see through" and look less ornate than he does in the current trilogy, when he appears in the prequel trilogy. I think that at the end of Episode 1 or 2, after the good guys/gals save the day, he will appear at the end cerimony "remade" out of golden parts. I mean, you can't very well give a droid a medal so why not encase him in gold instead of translucent plastic? I think it makes perfect sense, they did the same thing to Johnny 5 at the end of Short Circuit 2, and why not Threepio? I would really like to hear what the other people in the discussion group think."

JEV wrote: "This is not really on what James wrote, but since it's about C3-P0... I watch A New Hope : special edition last night on CBS (I don't know if it was the network or the station) and I concur with the idea of others who have said R2-D2 defenetly knows where's going, either after leaving the escape pod or when he sneaks out of the Lars residence. But the same doesn't go for 3PO. He doesn't have a clue, which would confirm the fact that R2-D2 is building or rather rebuilding him during the first movie, after he got destroyed by Sand People (again?). So your beloved droid, even if he's activated from time to time doesn't know where he is, until the story takes us back to Naboo for the end. What do you all think?"
Roderick: "On T'Bone Fender's Website, there is a very interesting scoop coming from.... Kenny Baker himself. Check out what the man inside R2-D2 says about Threepio in the prequel section of T'Bone Fender's Star Wars website and send in your comments!"

One minor flaw in saying 3PO gets "honored" by getting a golden chasy, it doesn't explain the silver right calf.  Artoo "rebuilding" him give a little more speculation on how he got it."

Nathaniel Reed wrote: "Considering what Kenny Baker, and other reports, have revealed, I still see 3PO as a bipedal android, and would suggest that his see-through innards would be an unplated skeleton, such as the Nimoudian War 'droids envisioned by Roderick in his storyboards. An older model would have less circuitry, so where we now have the dense wiring about his belly this would simply be an upgrade ; originally, there was far less, making him appear to be see-through.

Furthermore, what if the current chest- ( and limb- ) plating were introduced as simple protection from attack. What if his role as a Human-Cyborg Relations Protocol 'droid placed him in positions of political / military confidence, and he accompanied 'top brass' ? Or Royal personages ? It might explain his haughty manner !! And a confidentiality restraint presenting ignorance.

Yes, the Sand People could strike him down, but what if, perhaps valiantly protecting his owner, a lightsabre could slice him in two ? Or simply a blaster bolt ? It might be too close to the Cloud City events, although his reaction on seeing the troopers may be a direct memory from the earlier experience ! "

The Droids are the first characters we seen in the film, and they lead us to the suplimentary characters. Artoo leads us to Leia, then they leave the ship and Land On Tattoine. We follow them, they split up, then are reunited. Then  they are taken (Via The Jawas), to Luke's farm, where we are introduced to Luke...and so on.....throughout the film.

I have wondred if a similar pattern might emerge in Episode One. Will the Familiar Faces of Artoo and See-Threepio be the first we see following the opening Scrawl? The rumors are leaking out that 3PO might not even be in a cybernetic body, rather an AI (Artificial Intelligence) program on a Computer. I would find it very amusing to find the first scene a humourous exchange between R2 and 3P0. Perhaps, R2 is getting maintence or is retrieving information or something, and 3PO is The AI program monitoring things...and then the city is attacked..and R2 runs off leaving poor 3PO all by himself within the Computer System.

Even if 3PO is in AI form, I still wouldn't want to see his role diminished. 3PO and R2 are the comic relief of the film. And Not having 3PO around would definitely take away some of that. The Films will be dark (Especially Episode 3) and not having some form of relief, will definitely make things a bit uneasy. In Empire, The whole exchange between R2 and Threepio while Luke was dangling from the weather vane, obviously eased the suspense a little. Relaxed us, and let us enjoy.

It is obvious that very little information has come out regarding 3P0's role in the first film. 3PO isn't present in the majority of the scenes that have been posted here. I believe this is due to lack of information, rather than a diminished role. Having R2 around without 3PO would be a shame. That'd be like having Abbott without Costello. It just would be too different. Surely, more informaton will come out soon, giving us more details on 3PO's role in the film. "

Candyfish wrote: "Some interesting points have been brought up by others in the past - for example, the fact that Obi-Wan didn't recognize Artoo in ANH, or at least he says, "I don't seem to remember ever owning a droid." And yet, it would be logical to assume that Obi-Wan and Artoo would share at least a LITTLE screen time together in Ep. 1. I have a theory regarding this - R2 units, being so ubiquitous in the galaxy, do look alike, so it would be easy for Ben to forget what Artoo's particular color scheme was. However, if you watch closely during the scene in ANH where they discover Threepio missing an arm, at the bottom of the canyon, you will see an expression of concern on Ben's face - a rather unusual amount of concern for a droid. It is almost as if he is remembering - realizing - that Artoo and Threepio are the same two droids he encountered during Episodes 1-3 - and the completion of this circle is the signal for Ben to start Luke on his Jedi path.

Of course, probably no one thought of anything even remotely like this when they were filming the scene - but then again...

A second question had to do with when Artoo and Threepio first landed on Tatooine in ANH. Artoo seemed to know where to go, while Threepio was totally lost. And yet, neither Artoo nor Threepio recognized Obi-Wan, or the name Skywalker. The logical assumption would be that the two had their memories wiped, possibly by Obi-Wan, at the end of Episode 3 for safety's sake. But then, how could Artoo know where to go, twenty years later?

A possible explanation could be that their memories were not erased - but ENCRYPTED...possibly to become de-crypted and maybe even re-encrypted under key circumstances. Remember when Threepio said "There'll be no escape for the Princess this time", then later when he saw the hologram of her, he couldn't remember exactly who she was? Perhaps the mention of the name 'Skywalker' was a signal that triggered a program to keep her identity a secret. And how did the two manage to remain together (I'm assuming) for all those years between trilogies? Friendship, sure, but perhaps there was another motivating factor, programmed in both of them by Obi-Wan?"

ZAC wrote: "In reply to Candyfish.....Artoo knew where he was going because Princess Leia gave him the co-ordinates to seek out Obi-Wan Kenobi.  Bail Organa knew that if need be he could call upon Obi-Wan on the remote planet of Tatooine if he ever needed to.  That's what Princess Leia was doing.  She was ona mission for her foster father Bail, to recruit Obi-an for the rebellion because they needed his help.  However, as we know her ship got hijacked and she gave the necessary information to Artoo to find Kenobi.  Artoo's knowing where to go has NOTHING to do with the fact of him being there in the prequels.  He may well have had a memory wipe.  As for Threepio claiming he doesn't know Princess Leia......in the long screenplay version of A New Hope (official STAR WARS canon) there is an explanantion for this.  I can't remember it off the top of my head but it revolves around the droids not admitting or mentioning anything about the Princess to protect her. I'll check that up.  I've got the original radio drama of STAR WARS in a book format and the explanation is in there somewhere.  I'll get back to you. "

Gillespee wrote: "First of all, I honestly have no idea how it works that Artoo and 3P0 have "selectivly timed" memories.  But one thing I do know, while Obi-Wan may look concerned, there is not a shadow of doubt in my mind that this has nothing to do with the Prequels.  Two reasons: 1)GL didn't know if he'd ever get to make ESB let alone the Prequels at the time they were filming ANH, 2) Look how much ANH  has changed since the first draft, go buy a copy of the annotated screenplays if you don't know what I'm talking about, and see how much they've changed.  Alec Guiness is just a nice guy who doesn't like to see droids falling of big rocks.

While your explanation for selective memory is creative, as is your guess that 3P0 is AI, they both sound a little farfetched to me.  Hence, the following dialogue:
Obi-Wan:  Hello semi-living concouness that will someday become C3P0.
3P0- Why hello sir.
Obi-Wan-  C3P0, I'm going to implant this chip into your skull.  Wait, your AI.  Ok, when you become a droid Artoo will implant this chip into your skull.  From now on you will remember nothing until you hear the word "Sky Walker"
3P0- The Texas Ranger?
Obi-Wan- No.  And from now on, whenever you hear the word "Jello" you will repeat a Bill Cosby Himself Skit.
3P0-Oh, they're like a second language to me.
Anyway, while creative, I think they're a little off mark.  But, I am open to other suggestions."
