Star Wars Kenobi Details Revealed In New Interview With Ewan McGregor

Star Wars Kenobi

When Ewan McGregor starts shooting the Kenobi series next summer, he’ll be 49 years old. And for those wondering, that’s still 13 years younger than Alec Guiness was when he first roamed the deserts of Tatooine.

Now, it hasn’t been confirmed that the series will take place on Tatooine, but it doesn’t take much a genius to figure it out, since Obi-Wan Kenobi exiled himself there after Revenge of the Sith, the last time we saw him. And all involved aren't hiding the fact that we can expect to see Kenobi during this period, when most of his time spent was watching over a young Luke Skywalker.

Ewan McGregor was interviewed by Mickey Rapkin for Men’s Journal moments before he walked on stage to greet Kathleen Kennedy and 7,000 screaming fans at D23. It was there they made it official, McGregor would return to the famous role once again, this time in a new series airing on Disney+.

While he insists his lips are mostly sealed, saying “I’m not allowed to tell you anything about it” he did reveal that the Kenobi series will be six episodes long, an hour a piece.

That was just before he walked on stage and with 26 simple words, he was back in that galaxy far, far away, and the crowd responded with an enormous rapture…

“After secrets and fibs and not being able to talk about it, I am thrilled to bring out a beloved member of the Star Wars family.”

Here are the Kenobi bits from the interview where they discuss most of Ewan’s remarkable career. It’s a worthy read even without the Star Wars content so I recommend checking it out.

Returning to the character after 15 years…

“I want to get closer and closer to how Obi-Wan felt while Alec Guinness was playing him. I feel like I’m grayer and nearer him in age, so it’ll be easier to do that.”

What’s it about…

“The storyline sits between Episode III and Episode IV, when the Jedi Order was falling apart. It will be interesting to take a character we know in a way and show him—well, his arc will be quite interesting, I think, dealing with that the fact that all the Jedi were slaughtered with the end of Episode III. It’s quite something to get over.”

In the interview, Mickey also gets him to state that he hasn’t re-watched the prequel series since they were first released, but he plans to again soon. And his memory on why they were disliked was, “they were political.”
