The Clone Wars Preview In Vegas

Posted By Mike on March 20, 2008

A blog over at Market Saw is reporting that Warner Bros. will be hosting a sneak peak at The Clone Wars in Las Vegas on March 13th. See below for the excerpt:

"As part of a group exclusive footage presentation of several Warner properties including "The Dark Knight", "Get Smart" and "Speed Racer", Warner Bros. Pictures is presenting a sneak peak at "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" which is a 3D movie slated for an August 15th wide release. The screenings will both happen at 2:45pm at Le Theatre Des Arts, Paris Hotel and the Jubilee Theater, Bally's Hotel on Thursday, March 13th."

Now, the post mentions it being in 3-D. No word on if that means 3-D with the glasses and stuff jumping out at you or if it's just referenceing the style of animation. Click here for the full post.

Thanks Guillaume!

UPDATE: See below for the press release: (Note that it does not mention The Clone Wars being screened in 3-D with the funky glasses and so forth, so again, the 3-D mention from the post above is in regards to the style of animation)

WARNER BROS. PICTURES IS A “BIG” PRESENCE AT SHOWEST
STUDIO PRESENTS HOT SUMMER SLATE IN “THE BIG PICTURE ’08”

FEATURING BIG-NAME TALENT, INCLUDING CHRISTIAN BALE,
STEVE CARELL, MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL, ANNE HATHAWAY,
EMILE HIRSCH, CHRISTINA RICCI, GEORGE LUCAS AND MORE…

BURBANK, CA,– Showcasing some of the summer’s most-anticipated movies and some of the film industry’s biggest stars, Warner Bros. Pictures will host a star-studded event called The Big Picture ’08 at this year’s ShoWest Convention. The announcement was made today by Warner Bros. Pictures President of Domestic Distribution Dan Fellman.

The program will highlight the studio’s exciting summer slate, featuring advance footage—some never-before-seen—from each film. In addition, talent from both sides of the camera will be on hand to present their titles, including stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Emile Hirsch and Christina Ricci; and directors George Lucas, Christopher Nolan and Peter Segal.

The Big Picture ’08 will be held at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas on Thursday, March 13, beginning at 2:45 p.m. ShoWest attendees will be treated to a sneak peek at Warner Bros. Pictures’ summer releases, including scenes from the high-octane action adventure “Speed Racer”; the action comedy “Get Smart”; the action drama “The Dark Knight,” the follow-up to “Batman Begins”; “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2,” which reunites the stars of the original hit feature; and the highly anticipated computer-animated feature “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” which brings a galaxy far, far away back to the big screen with a brand new look from Lucasfilm Animation.

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “From the titles to the talent behind them, this is one of the most exciting film line-ups we’ve seen for any season, with a wide range of movies that offer something for everyone. We wanted to showcase this special slate with our partners in the distribution community, who we are sure will share our excitement about what is coming from Warner Bros. this summer.”

ABOUT WARNER BROS. PICTURES’ SUMMER RELEASES:

Opening nationwide on May 9, “Speed Racer” follows the adventures of the young race car driver Speed in his quest for glory in his thunderous Mach 5. Written and directed by the Wachowski Brothers, the live-action film marks the brothers’ first writing/directing collaboration since “The Matrix” movies. “Speed Racer” stars Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, Benno Fürmann, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rain, and Richard Roundtree. Joel Silver, Grant Hill, Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski produced the film with David Lane Seltzer, Michael Lambert and Bruce Berman serving as executive producers. From Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures, “Speed Racer” will be released concurrently in conventional theatres and IMAX theatres.

Coming to theatres on June 20, “Get Smart” stars Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart and Anne Hathaway as Agent 99. In the action comedy, Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 are teamed on a mission to thwart the latest plot for world domination by the evil crime syndicate known as KAOS. The film also stars Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin, Terence Stamp and James Caan. Peter Segal directed “Get Smart” from a screenplay by Tom J. Astle & Matt Ember. Andrew Lazar, Charles Roven, Alex Gartner and Michael Ewing produced the film, with Peter Segal, Steve Carell, Brent O’Connor, Jimmy Miller, Dana Goldberg and Bruce Berman executive producing. “Get Smart” is from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures.

“The Dark Knight,” the hotly anticipated follow-up to the blockbuster “Batman Begins,” opens nationwide on July 18. Reuniting Christian Bale, once again embodying the man behind the mask, and director Christopher Nolan, the new action drama takes Batman across the world in his fight against a growing criminal threat. The film also stars Michael Caine, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Morgan Freeman. Charles Roven, Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan produced the film from a screenplay by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull. From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, “The Dark Knight” will be released simultaneously in conventional theatres and IMAX theatres, and includes scenes shot using IMAX cameras, marking a groundbreaking integration of the two film formats.

“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” is slated for release on August 8 from Warner Bros. Pictures and Alcon Entertainment. Amber Tamblyn, America Ferrera, Blake Lively and Alexis Bledel reprise their roles as four special young women, continuing their journey toward adulthood that began with “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.” Sanaa Hamri directed the film from a screenplay by Elizabeth Chandler, based on Ann Brashares’ best-selling series of novels. Debra Martin Chase, Denise Di Novi, Broderick Johnson and Andrew A. Kosove are the producers, with Kira Davis and Alison Greenspan executive producing.

On August 15, the Star Wars Saga makes a much-anticipated return to the big screen in an entirely new way. Produced by Lucasfilm Animation, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” will take audiences on incredible new adventures on the front lines of an intergalactic struggle between good and evil, combining the legendary storytelling of Lucasfilm Ltd. with state-of-the-art computer animation. Favorite characters like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padmé Amidala will be joined by brand-new heroes like Anakin’s padawan learner, Ahsoka. Sinister villains – led by Palpatine, Count Dooku and General Grievous – are poised to rule the galaxy. Stakes are high, and the fate of the Star Wars universe rests in the hands of the daring Jedi Knights.

Thanks again Guillaume.

UPDATE #2:
The Clone Wars got it's preview at "The Big Picture" at Showest in Vegas yesterday. George Lucas made a surprise appearance accompanied by Clone troopers to roll out the new footage.

From Variety: '"I think it can live up to the live-action movies," Lucas said before rolling a clip of "Clone Wars," based on an animated series Lucas is producing for Warners sister cable net Cartoon Network.'

From IESB: "The presentation ended with Star Wars: The Clone Wars, introduced by George Lucas himself and accompanied by a small army of clonetroopers.

The footage began with Anakin and his apprentice Ahsoka traveling to a major clone wars battle. They deploy with a bunch of clonetroopers and lead an attack straight up the side of a mountain to a base at the top. The vehicles they're traveling in actually turn and start climbing vertically up the rock while the Jedi follow on ropes.

Following that there was a montage of footage with Duel of the Fates playing over it. There was one sequence where Count Dooku dispatches Asajj Ventress to find Jabba the Hutt's son in an effort to win his favor."

Thanks for the follow up Guillaume.

UPDATE #3: It seems that preview of The Clone Wars at Showest is getting a bunch of press and people seem to be quite excited with what they saw. See below for a number of links to coverage and excerpts...

FirstShowing.net - "ShoWest: Warner Brothers' Summer to Remember"
See below for the excerpt:

"Last, but not least, George Lucas took the stage with his army of Clone Troopers to present a brief clip from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Back in February we announced that Clone Wars would be launching in theaters with a 100-minute movie before it heads to the small screen. Exciting news, although I wasn't sure whether this was a good idea, after today, I'm convinced it will be. The scene was a short battle scene where Anakin and his padawan Ahsoka are fighting some enemies at the top of a giant rock wall. There was also a brief bit of a fight between Obi-Wan and a female Sith villain who had two red lightsabers. I got so into the scenes and fighting that when it ended abruptly, literally I wanted to do is sit there and finish watching the entire movie. It wasn't anything extraordinary, but it pulled me and I was enjoying what I saw."

EmpireOnline.com - "George Lucas Talks Clone Wars - Exclusive: Plus the live-action show"
See below for an excerpt:

"However, the original cast from the movies won't be lending their vocal talents here. "No, [we won't be using the main cast members]," he explained. "Animation has its own demands, especially as we're also doing a TV series – and this started out as a TV series."

We also asked him about the current state of play on the long-planned live-action show, set to expand the Star Wars universe further. He was evasive on details, but he would say: "The live action show doesn't have any of the characters from the movies. It takes place at the same time, between episodes three and four, but it doesn't have anything to do with the Skywalkers. You kind of hear about the Emperor, and it takes place in that world, but it's like you have the TV show 24 and the TV show The Wire; they're in the same place but they're two completely different things." When we tried to push him on characters, he'd only say: "Well, we're still writing it, so I can't give anything away."'

YahooNews.com - Lucas offers peek at new `Clone Wars'"
See below for an exccerpt:

"The movie came about as an afterthought while Lucas was developing an animated TV show of the same name. That show debuts this fall, but Lucas figured it was ripe for big-screen treatment, too.

"You've got the whole assembly line built, and then you say, `Hey, we can make up something,'" Lucas said in an interview. "It was like old-time moviemaking. What I love about television, it's like Monogram Pictures or the old studio system, where a couple guys come to work and they sit and have some coffee and go, `Why don't we make a movie about such and such? OK, fine.' And at the end of the day, it's pretty much on its way."'

You can see that same story here at CNN.

And in Red Tails news...

ComingSoon.net - "Exclusive: George Lucas' Red Tails in '09?"
See below for an excerpt:

"As a brief taster for that interview, we found out how things were going on Red Tails, the film he's producing about the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all African-American pilot squad during World War II. With all the work that Mr. Lucas has been doing on his two upcoming television shows, we wondered about his future working in film and if he still had time to work on the war epic written by John Ridley.

"As a matter of fact, I'm working on it tomorrow," he told us, much to our surprise. "We're getting towards a script, and probably start shooting before the end of the year, and it should come out next year, maybe. That's probably going to be the last movie I do, apart from my own movies, but my own movies are going to be more esoteric and probably will come and go in a week and be in one or two arthouses. It's basically the same as what Francis (Ford Coppola) is doing."'

Big thanks to Guillaume, Brian, Suresh and my father for the links.

UPDATE #4: Our friend Guillaume sent over a couple more links...

First, click here for an IESB interview (video) with George Lucas from ShoWest.

Second, you can click here for a ShoWest report at The Hollywood Reporter. (note the error in the release date)

Also, some more here and here over at the Official Starwars.com Blog.

UPDATE #5: The ShoWest coverage continues with yet more links to interviews.

First, you can now check out the full exclusive ComingSoon.net interview with George Lucas by clicking right here. Excerpt below: (Thanks Mirko)

"CS: It's funny you should mention that because it leads to a question I've always wanted to ask you. Anyone who works at the same job for thirty years must wake up somedays and think, "You know what? I don't want to do this job today." You've been so invested in "Star Wars," creating so many worlds and characters, but you must wake up some days and say "I want to do something else today."
Lucas: Yeah, well that happened actually right after I finished the first trilogy. I said, "Look, I expected to do one movie and it turned into three and I expected to be done in a year and it ended up being ten, so I'm ready to move on now." It was later when I realized that it was so big that no matter what I did, it was going to be linked to me and that was basically what I am no matter what I do, so that's when I said, "Okay, I'll finish the whole saga" and then once I came to that, I said, "Well, gee, it would be fun to do an animated film." I love animation. The idea of CG anime is something I've been interested in for a long time, and it's a chance to explore other things and then train a lot of people and let them take off and use their imaginations.

CS: Do you think you'd have other people continue the "Star Wars" saga past "Episode VI" or turn some of the other material into films?
Lucas: But there's no story past "Episode VI", there's just no story. It's a certain story about Anakin Skywalker and once Anakin Skywalker dies, that's kind of the end of the story. There is no story about Luke Skywalker, I mean apart from the books. But there's three worlds: There's my world that I made up, there's the licensing world that's the books, the comics, all that kind of stuff, the games, which is their world, and then there's the fans' world, which is also very rich in imagination, but they don't always mesh. All I'm in charge of is my world. I can't be in charge of those other people's world, because I can't keep up with it."

Click here for "Lucas Sends in the Clones" at EOnline.com which mentions Boba Fett's inclusion in The Clone Wars series. (Thansk Guillaume)

Finally, click here for an AP interview with George at ShoWest. (Thanks Guillaume)

UPDATE #6: Got yet another George Lucas interview from ShoWest, this time from Entertainment Weekly. Click here for Lucas talking about the prospects for the Star Wars saga in 3-D (Not if, but when), the fact that The Clone Wars movie will not be in 3-D, where he stands in the live action series (going over spripts for season 1) and more... (Thanks Guillaume)

UPDATE #7: The seemingly endless ShoWest coverage continues and we're certainly not complaining. Click here for an exclusive video interview with George Lucas at Collider. (Thanks Steve)
