STAR WARS
Battle of Hoth: Index: South Slopes

shot preview description

Luke walks towards the evacuation area on the south slopes, which apparently remains inaccessible to the invading Imperial forces. He walks with the sun on his left side. If it is still morning then he is walking south.

Luke spots the Millennium Falcon flying in a direction away from the sun. If this is still morning then the ship is flying west; if it is afternoon then the ship flies east. The surrounding terrain is rolling hills in every direction; there northern plain is obscured from sight.

An unknown time later, Luke reaches the South Slopes, where the last fighters are being readied to escort the last transport ship. Luke is greeted by other surviving pilots.

There are two X-wings in the air. Did their pilots come from surviving Rogue Squadron snowspeeders, or were they ready in the evacuation area from the start of the battle?

R2-D2 seated in Luke Skywalker's X-Wing fighter. We can't see any obvious shadows, and the sun isn't clearly visible in the window reflections. Maybe a reflection on the droid's round head can help constrain the direction of the sun?

Luke Skywalker approaches his X-wing fighter, off the left side of the screen. Luke appears to have hurt his right arm, perhaps during the fall from the belly of the AT-AT he destroyed.

Two of the other pilots have helmets with plain insignia on their helmets. Wedge Antilles has a helmet decorated in dark olive-green; in his left hand he is carrying a box the size of a briefcase. If any of these pilots is Janson then he must be the one in the far left background. Seeing five pilots and gunners other than Luke, we may infer that a few snowspeeders survived.

Another closeup of R2-D2's head.

Luke Skywalker enters his fighter's cockpit and initiates launch. The sky is partly cloudy, and yet the sun is hard to locate.

Luke Skywalker's X-wing departs Hoth. The sun shines from off the right side of the picture.
