Rumor: The Clone Wars Getting The 4K Treatment?

Posted by Eric on June 23, 2014 at 04:42 PM CST

MakingStarWars has a report claiming that animators at Lucasfilm are re-rendering Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 4K.

(A quick side note: Although the 4K format was designed for cutting-edge televisions with Ultra HD displays, some of the quality improvements are discernible on regular HDTVs -- hence the push to expand the range of 4K content even as sales of Ultra HD TVs aren't skyrocketing.)

The MSW report, which is sourced to an individual "involved with the German versions of the series," notes that "Netflix is pushing all of its streaming exclusives to be rendered in 4K, as it gives them a huge edge over traditional content providers." The Clone Wars has already been a big success for Netflix, so it's no surprise that both Disney and Netflix would want the series to be available in a super-high-quality format.

"Seasons 1-3 have already been rendered in 4K," the report reads, "and Lucasfilm hopes to release all six seasons on Netflix sometime this fall."
