Chapter IV: A Death Blow

“I never planned on killing you, but I will make you share my pain, Kenobi."

~Maul prepares to murder Duchess Satine Kryze in front of Kenobi

During his life, Obi-Wan would meet several people who would play a pivotal role in his life at one time or another. Due to his upbringing at the Jedi Temple and his time leading the 212th Attack Battalion most of his friendly relationships were relegated to other Jedi and members of the Clone Army. However, there would be one person who would have a profound effect on him, perhaps more than any other. Duchess Satine Kryze was a member of the House Kryze and the ruler of Mandalore for most of the Clone Wars. At one point, while under thereat from insurgents, Obi-Wan and his master Qui-Gon Jinn were assigned as protectors of the Duchess. This assignment lasted a year and the three of them were often on the run spending a lot of time together in intimate situations. It was during this period that Obi-Wan and Satine developed feelings for each other and when the assignment was up Satine asked Kenobi to leave the Jedi Order and be with her. Kenobi would choose to complete his Jedi training and left Mandalore but the two would be forever bound and it can’t be understated how much Satine would mean to Obi-Wan.

Meanwhile, Maul and Opress while nearly dying in their escape pod after the battle on Florrum were picked up floating aimlessly in space by Pre Vizsla and members of Death Watch, including Bo-Katan Kryze. Death Watch was a splinter group of Mandalorians who felt the leadership, under the rule of Satine Kryze, had weakened Mandalore and its standing in the galaxy. Vizsla, thinking Maul and Opress could help him take back the capital, made a deal with the brothers and they formed an alliance. Bo-Katan, who was the sister of Satine, questioned this decision and didn’t trust their motives.

For Maul, this was an opportunity to lead an army and use that position of power to finally once and for all destroy Kenobi and the Jedi Order. When Pre Vizsla no longer needed Maul, he imprisoned him and his brother and took governorship of Mandalore. Maul would soon break out and challenge Vizsla to a duel for control of the Darksaber and the throne of Mandalore. Maul would prevail in a classic duel of technology versus mystics and assume governorship over the Mandalorians. Meanwhile Satine, with the help of her sister Bo-Katan and nephew Korkie, would also break out of prison and manage to get a message to Obi-Wan and the Jedi. Satine would be recaptured but not before Kenobi would receive the message.

The Jedi Council decided it could not interfere on a neutral world so Obi-Wan chose to go by himself, without the help of the council. He and Satine nearly escaped but Maul and his forces overpowered them, and they were both taken to the throne room. As a helpless Kenobi stood by, Maul would force choke Satine taunting him the whole time. Then, in a remarkable act of cruelty, Maul would drive the Darksaber through Satine seemingly killing her.

As she lay dying on the cold floor Duchess Satine Kryze, the former ruler of Mandalore, with her last breath professed her everlasting and undying love for Obi-Wan and died in his arms. So, with that, Maul would exact a measure of revenge on Kenobi long in the making, but it would prove fleeting however as Maul would learn that the madness inside of him knows no bounds and indeed has no resolution.

Maul’s celebration didn’t last long as Darth Sidious his former Master would arrive after being alerted about Maul’s existence by the Jedi Council who still were unaware Palpatine was in fact a Sith Lord. Sidious didn’t want Maul and his brother interfering with his grand plans, so he fought them both, killing Opress and allowing Maul to live seeing he could be useful.

Kenobi would escape Mandalore with the help of Bo-Katan, and other sympathetic Mandalorians, who revealed herself to be Satine’s sister. Obi-Wan would continue his part in the Clone Wars fighting many battles and creating a reputation as one of the great heroes of the war between the Republic and the Separatists. He would see Maul briefly on Vizsla Keep 09, a Mandalorian supply outpost, during a small skirmish but that would be last time the two would come face to face for many years.
