Lucasfilm editor and author J.W. Rinzler has been working on The Making of Return of the Jedi for quite a while now, and in the process, he's had plenty of access to the Lucasfilm archives. In the process of conducting research for his book, Rinzler stumbled across bloopers that have been hidden for thirty-six years: outtakes from Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. At San Diego Comic-Con, Rinzler revealed those outtakes to the public for the first time, albeit in a limited fashion -- attendees at the panel were asked not to record the presentation.
While we wait for Lucasfilm to clear the copyright issues and present the actual blooper reel, Mashable has a report on what was in it. One of the clips is described as follows: "Alec Guinness (Ben Kenobi) gets whacked in the face by Chewbacca's arm in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon; Guinness proceeds to boggle his eyes and make faces at the camera."
Head over to Mashable for details on the rest of the outtakes. Here's hoping that this blooper reel (and similar material from the other two Original Trilogy films) makes it into the next "complete" saga box set.
UPDATE: As Leland "Keeper of the Holocron" Chee reminds us on Facebook, "These videos, and many more will be included on the enhanced edition ebooks for all three of Rinzler's classic trilogy Making of books. They will release on October 1st, the same day as The Making of Return of the Jedi hardcover releases."
