In New Interview, Tight-Lipped Abrams Praises "Unfamiliar World" Of Original Trilogy

Star Wars Episode VII director (and now co-screenwriter) J.J. Abrams discussed a fan video with "rules" for making Star Wars movies and explained what appealed to him about the original trilogy in a recent interview with The Times magazine. The original interview is behind a paywall, but The Daily Telegraph gives us some key points from the article.

  • Abrams gets fan anxieties: He said that the "4 Rules to Make Star Wars Great Again" video conveys "a feeling that we share very much" on the production team.
  • On the expansiveness of the original films: "I loved how Star Wars had that sense of a world far beyond the borders of what you can see and have been told – it's one of the things it did so brilliantly. ... The beauty of that movie was that it was an unfamiliar world, and yet you wanted to see it expand and to see where it went."
  • He understands fondness for the prequels: "A lot of kids who saw all the prequels when they were young really do identify with those movies as much as my generation identified with the originals."
Abrams would not comment on story or casting decisions, although according to The Times, actor Chiwetel Ejiofor was "sitting in the lobby of J.J. Abrams' office" when the interviewer arrived to meet Abrams. Jedi News wasted no time in flat-out proclaiming that Ejiofor "will be joining the cast of Episode VII in an as yet undisclosed role," but as always, nothing is confirmed until Lucasfilm or Disney says it is.
