Why J.J. Abrams Won't Return To Direct Another Star Wars

Posted by Dustin on March 15, 2016 at 03:44 PM CST

In a recent interview with Fortune, the topic of working on another Star Wars film came up, to which J.J. answers.

It was a wonderful way to visit a place that meant so much to me and obviously so many, Abrams said in an interview with Fortune at South by Southwest. I knew that if it worked, it was the perfect time to step down and if it didnt, no one would want me to do it anyway.

It is also noted that J.J. is the executive producer of Episodes VIII, and IX. So some involvement is there but for now J.J. seems content.
Im very happy to be where I am, he says. Rian Johnson [who is currently directing Episode Eight] is brilliant and needs no help from me. As executive producer, Ive been collaborating with them, but they are obviously doing all of the heavy lifting and its very exciting to see whats going on.
