Chapter II: Back from the Dead

"...he lives in the Outer Rim, in exile."

~Mother Talzin tells Savage Opress that Maul survived

The two halves of Mauls body fell down a shaft, with Obi-Won assuming he had killed the Sith apprentice, but that’s not where our story ends. As it turns out, Maul’s strength flows from his rage and will to survive and he would use the force to grab an air vent, ending up in a trash container. This container would be dumped in a junkyard on Lotho Minor where he would fester for many years thinking of nothing but getting revenge on the Jedi who put him there.

After many years, slowing going mad, Maul was rescued by his lost brother Savage Opress who received help from Mother Talzin. Talzin used her black magic to restore Maul’s mind and repair his body providing him with a pair of cybernetic legs. Maul’s first and only thought was getting back at Kenobi for what he did to him at the Battle of Naboo years earlier.

During this time, Obi-Wan as we know, fulfilled his promise to his former master Qui-Gon Jinn and trained Anakin Skywalker to be a Jedi Knight. The events that occurred in The Phantom Menace resulted in the formation of the Galactic Republic whose main threat was the Separatists led by former Jedi Count Dooku. This period was known as the Clone Wars of which the Jedi Council and their Knights were a major part of now Chancellor Palatine’s plan to win the war. The Jedi were never able to discover the true origin of Maul and if he was either the Sith Master or the Sith Apprentice.

Ten years would pass before Obi-Wan and Maul would meet again. With his mind and body fully restored and now teamed with his brother Savage Opress, Maul’s only thought was revenge, revenge against the Jedi who put him there in the first place. Knowing the Jedi wouldn’t be easily fooled, Maul knew that to lure the now Jedi Master Kenobi into a trap, innocent lives would have to be at risk. The two Dathomirians flew to Raydonia with the intent to slaughter innocents, young innocents in fact, and broadcast this to the Jedi Council.

The plan worked as Kenobi could not ignore the murdering of innocent children and the council agreed to let him go alone, as per Maul’s request. Kenobi arrived to find the two waiting for him and engaged a brief battle but was quickly overmatched. The brothers took an unconscious Kenobi aboard their ship and lifted off, but little did they know that he wasn’t alone, and Obi-Wan didn’t know it either. As luck would have it former Sith Acolyte and apprentice to Darth Tyrannus (Dooku), Asajj Ventress would arrive at the same time, only she was looking to collect the very large bounty on Savage Opress’s head. The Dathomir Witch had run-ins with Kenobi in the past when she was working with Dooku, but after being betrayed by her Master she turned to a life of bounty hunting and no longer took sides in the war. The two, Ventress and Kenobi, shared a mutual respect even though they were on opposing sides most of their lives.

As the two were having their way with Kenobi, Ventress appeared and the four of them engaged in a vicious and epic battle, Asajj fighting Opress and Kenobi fighting Maul. Maul was using the death of Obi-Wan’s former master Qui-Gon Jinn to anger Kenobi and keep him off balance. This caused Maul, and Opress, to gain the upper hand and Ventress and the Jedi Master were forced to flee to fight another day.

Maul wasn’t fazed by this failed attempt however as he knew his mere existence would force the Jedi to hunt him down giving him another opportunity for revenge. Revenge, against not only Kenobi but the rest of the Jedi as well.
