TFN Review: LEGO Star Wars Small Scenes From a Big Galaxy From DK

Posted by Adam on November 23, 2015 at 11:36 PM CST

Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy is unlike pretty much all of the LEGO Star Wars books that DK have released previously, and it comes across as more of an art book than an informational guide.

The book opens with a foreword by Jens Kronvold Frederiksen and Louise Weiss Borup, LEGO Design Director and Marketing Manager respectively, followed by a introduction from the author, Vesa Lehtimäki.

Focusing on scenes from the OT-era, an explanation for which Lehtimäki gives in his introduction (with no indication that he has an aversion to the prequels), the bulk of the book is split between the three planets of Tatooine, Hoth and Endor. Each section features a multitude of both classic Star Wars moments and also humorously irreverent views of background scenes as well as several character portraits, all of which are accompanied by notes from the author, typically providing both some insight into the thought process behind each shot and also how it was achieved.

The author also includes amusing one-liners for many of the images in the book and there is a mixture of black & white and colour photos throughout.

Many of the shots may also be familiar to readers, with the contents comprising a split of both new photography alongside some of the best of Lehtimäki's recognizable online portfolio. Much of that centres on scenes set on the planet Hoth, unsurprising, given the fact that the author hails from the snowy landscapes of Finland.

A Behind the Scenes section at the end of the book features an interview with the author as well as images showing the set-up of certain shots, preliminary sketches and rejected shots from multiple photoshoots.

LEGO Star Wars Small Scenes From a Big Galaxy offers plenty to inspire both toy collectors and LEGO builders alike.

LEGO Star Wars Small Scenes From a Big Galaxy is out now and available to buy online and from all good bookstores, priced $28.99 CAD and $24.99 USD.

As always, a big thanks to DK Canada, whose Star Wars Boutique you can visit here, and be sure to check out their Q&A with author Vesa Lehtimäki.
