A New Rumor Suggests Obi-Wan Kenobi Could Appear In Episode IX

Posted by Steve on June 24, 2018 at 06:35 PM CST

Definitely falling under the "take this with a grain of salt" category, there is a new rumor going around that Ewan McGregor will be reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in next year's untitled Star Wars Episode IX. The U.K. paper, The Sun, is reporting that McGregor will be secretly filming a couple of scenes with director J.J. Abrams but offers no details other than that.

Obviously, it would have to be a Force Ghost type of situation similar to The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi as Obi-Wan Kenobi was of course killed by Darth Vader in A New Hope. More recently he provided some voice work in 2015's The Force Awakens, also directed by Abrams, where Rey hears Kenobi's voice on Takodana when she picks up Anakin Skywalkers old lightsaber.

McGregor caused a minor frenzy when he appeared on the red carpet at the premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story a month ago, with many fans assuming that signaled he was back in the mix somehow. A Kenobi standalone has been long rumored but with the amount of false reporting going around lately, it's hard to make sense of what's real and what isn't. It's important to note that at no point has Lucasfilm or Disney announced a Kenobi film of any type and recent reporting has stated the film could be on hold.

What's very real is the fan's strong desire to see McGregor return to the iconic role in some way. His take on Obi-Wan Kenobi was one of the highlights of the prequels and fans have been wanting to see him reprise the role for some time, focusing on his time on Tatooine watching over a young Luke Skywalker. His popularity has only grown with shows such as The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels both depicting Kenobi in a very flattering light. There's no denying Obi-Wan's place in history, specifically the Skywalker timeline, but how that would connect to Rey in this new trilogy remains to be seen. But we did see Yoda return in The Last Jedi so perhaps anything is possible.

Stay tuned as this one keeps developing.
