Snoke The Force Awakens

Rumor - Possible Return Of Supreme Leader Snoke For Star Wars Episoe IX?

Posted by Steve on September 23, 2018 at 03:03 PM CST

A move that baffled some when the The Last Jedi came out was the shocking death of First Order head honcho, Supreme Leader Snoke played by Andy Serkis. We all remember the throne room scene where Kylo Ren chops his former Master in half at the waist thereby freeing himself of the constant abuse he received at the hands of the powerful and scary Dark Side user.

Many were surprised by this move since the character was given so much attention in The Force Awakens and in the marketing surrounding both films. Added to the fact that there’s so much we don’t know about him understandably made and continues to make the fans feeling a little shorted on the issue. With strong ties to the Unknown Regions and an intriguing yet mostly mysterious past, Snoke was truly one of the more interesting characters to emerge from this new crop. But that all ended at the hands of bay-boy Kylo Ren, or did it?

Snoke The Last Jedi

If I may borrow a line from Luke Skywalker, no one is ever truly gone, and if the recent rumors are to be believed then we could see the return of Snoke in J.J. Abrams Episode IX due out next year. Last weekend, at the Keystone Comic Con in Philadelphia, actor/director Andy Serkis was scheduled to attend as a guest but at the last minute had to cancel for “scheduling conflicts”.

While seemingly innocuous and fairly common at conventions, fans have taken to believe that Serkis had to cancel the appearance so that he could film scenes for Episode IX. It’s pure speculation of course but there is recent precedent to support such a rumor. Billy Dee Williams who plays Lando Calrissian and Jonas Suotamo who plays Chewbacca were both called to set to film scenes for J.J. Abrams, themselves having to cancel convention appearances. Also, the fact that Abrams is back directing could indicate a return of Snoke since he was the one who introduced the character to the world back in 2015 in The Force Awakens.

If it’s true and Snoke is returning, that’s something Abrams needs to figure out. As we just discussed with Luke Skywalker, is it possible we’ll see our first Dark Side Force ghost in the Disney era? There are plenty of examples of Sith and Dark Side users coming back after their deaths in the Expanded Universe, but none have appeared in canon so far as this is generally thought of as a Jedi technique only. With a time jump rumor still going around perhaps even a flashback or two is on the schedule, another possible mechanism that would allow Snoke to come back.

So, while a fun thought, this is strictly a rumor at this point and Serkis, Abrams and the rest has of course made no mention of it recently. It's worth noting that Serkis had this to say a while back concerning his return...

"Look, it’s Star Wars, so you never know how life, or whether life can be come back to or not. Whether you can be resuscitated or brought back. I was shocked. Dramatically, it felt absolutely right for that moment in the film, so I didn’t question it. I just think it’s a very, very important scene, so I didn’t question it. But I do, I know it’s left fans feeling like, that they were really searching for something there. And what I’m saying is, who knows?"

From the horse's mouth. For his part, Serkis is in high demand these days both in front of and behind the camera so it’s incredibly likely he’s just busy and was forced to cancel his appearance at the convention.

With Episode IX still over a year away we've got plenty of time to think about such things. What does everybody think? Would you like to see Snoke make some sort of a comeback in the final episode? Let us know!

Till next time...MTFBWY.
