Other recipients will include Lincoln screenwriter Tony Kushner and architect Laurie Olin. President Obama will also present the National Humanities Medal at the Wednesday ceremony.

Lucas' medal citation reads as follows:

George Lucas for his contributions to American cinema. By combining the art of storytelling with boundless imagination and cutting-edge techniques, Mr. Lucas has transported us to new worlds and created some of the most beloved and iconic films of all time.
The National Medal of Arts is part of the National Endowment for the Arts and is "the highest award given to artists and arts patrons by the United States Government."
