TFN Review: Star Wars: Complete Vehicles

Posted by Adam on October 18, 2013 at 11:49 PM CST

Star Wars: Complete Vehicles is the the latest title in the series of books that provide incredible cross-sections of the spaceships and craft from the Star Wars galaxy, and includes four new cross-section artworks alongside the many that have been seen previously.

Opening with a foreward from ILM Visual Effects Supervisor on Episodes I-III, John Knoll, the subsequent sections cover The Old Republic, The Galactic Empire and Technology.

The rest of the book contains one and two-page spreads typically devoted to each vehicle, predominantly in the order in which they are seen in the saga. These pages are interspersed with brief sections that provide a backdrop that serves to explain the purpose of the vehicle and provide some context as to its place in the galaxy.

To say that the illustrations are exceptional is an understatement. The attention to detail is phenomenal and the level to which they delve seemingly leaves no stone unturned in documenting every intricate piece of a craft's construction. Accompanying each illustration is one or more stills from the movies as well as several paragraphs that provide further details regarding particular aspects of the vehicle in question.

Towards the back of the book are 12 pages of data files, with each one covering points such as the make, number of crew, hyperdrive capabilities, armaments and weaponry, alongside a smaller version of the vehicle's cross-section illustration.

Following the data files is a glossary of some of the terms referenced throughout the earlier sections, before the book is rounded-out with short biographies of the illustrators Richard Chasemore and Hans Jenssen.

Star Wars: Complete Vehicles is out now and available at all good bookstores, priced $35.00 in both the USA and Canada.
