Star Wars Galaxys Edge Cookbook

Inspired by the cuisine from the exciting new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge themed lands at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook is the ultimate source for creating out-of-this-world meals and treats from a galaxy far, far away.

Join intergalactic gourmet Strono “Cookie” Tuggs for a mouthwatering journey into the cuisine of Black Spire Outpost and beyond.

From the swamps of Dagobah to the forests of Endor and the deserts of Jakku, chef extraordinaire Strono “Cookie” Tuggs has traveled countless light-years to compile the galaxy’s most delicious recipes into this unique volume.

With Cookie as your guide, journey to the streets of Black Spire Outpost and discover delectable delicacies such as Braised Shaak Roast, Nerf Kebabs, Mustafarian Lava Buns, Huttese Slime Pods, Spicy Mandalorian Stew, and much more.

Featuring seventy recipes—including sides, sauces, soups, breads, main courses, desserts, and drinks—this comprehensive cookbook is a hyperspace route to the tastiest treats in the galaxy, bringing a little taste of Black Spire Outpost right into your own home.

Star Wars Galaxy's Edge Cookbook

“Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook” may be a long title, but it is befitting this new book from Insight Editions, which is just about the best bang for your buck you’ll find this year in Star Wars publishing.

Part of the Galaxy’s Edge media project and written by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Marc Sumerak, this book is equal parts Star Wars fun and relatively easy real-world recipes that you and your friends can enjoy! It’s one thing to dress up as your favorite characters and act your favorite scenes, but being able to sit down and immerse yourself in the aroma and flavors of the galaxy, that’s something else entirely.

Full disclosure, I’m vegan, so while there are few items in the book that I can enjoy, mostly sauces and drinks, I cannot comment on the tastiness of the menu. From what the carnivorous, omnivorous, gluten sensitive, and vegetarian Star Wars fans have said, the food items listed in this book are all equally delicious and easy to make. From Wroshyr Tree Cake to Stuffed Puffer Pig, indeed each item was created not only with Star Wars in mind, but your palette and pantry as well.

Beyond all that, this book has two other things going for it that make it worth owning, self-imposed dietary restrictions aside.

First, and instantly obvious once you pick the book up, is that the presentation is gorgeous. It’s heavy, substantive, and beautiful to look at it. Besides the folks at Lucasfilm and Insight Editions, props must be given to the following people, all who played a vital role in how the book “looks” …

-Ted Thomas (photography)
-Elena P. Craig (food/prop styling)
-Wesley Anderson (food/prop styling asst.)
-Joel Hustak (original art)

To “see” what your cooking, baking, or mixing before you cook, bake, or mix it is an added benefit, and the layout/photography of the dishes is both thoughtful and artistic. If the pictures don't make your mouth water then I don't know what to tell you.

Star Wars Galaxy's Edge Cookbook

The second feature, and vital as someone who doesn’t really cook from recipes, the book has a cool story kicker. This in-universe tale is based on the Galaxy’s Edge theme park and is told from the point of view of one of its denizens, Strono “Cookie” Tuggs. This is where Joel’s artwork comes into play and he has illustrated some fun pieces to parallel the narrative.

Tuggs used to be the head chef at Maz Kanata’s castle on Takodana before well, you know, the Fist Order came a knockin. So, he fled to this backwater outpost, Black Spire, and opened his own cookery, Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, conveniently located at Docking Bay 7.

We get some backstory for the old Artiodac, learning where he came from and how he spent years “explorin’ the gastronomic galaxy”, honing his craft. He explains how he ended up on Batuu in his modified Sienar-Chall Utilipede Transport, which is his all-in-one travelling kitchen, complete with dry, wet, and cold storage.

He takes us on a bit of a tour of the outpost as well, teaching us about Black Spire cuisine along way as we visit places like Ronto Roasters, Oga’s Cantina, and Kat Saka’s Kettle to name a few. Again, it’s incredible to think these are places you can actually visit and sample their tasty offerings!

This narrative opens the book and lays the foundation for the recipes that follow, and will acclimatize you to the vernacular and axioms you can expect to find in the pages that follow.

This portion of the book was written by Marc Sumerak (Droidography) who has another book coming out soon, “Star Wars: Secrets of the Jedi”, and does a great job introducing you to Cookie. This isn’t Tuggs first appearance, he’s been in other Galaxy’s Edge tie-ins, “Black Spire” by Delilah S. Dawson and “A Crash of Fate” by Zoraida Córdova, but this would be his full and proper introduction to the world.

In this case, the “cook” in cookbook is Chelsea Monroe-Cassel, who has worked on many pop-culture cookbooks including “World of Warcraft: The Official Cookbook” and the GoT inspired “A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Companion Cookbook” She seems to me to be the right person for the job, as her passion for food, ingredients, and flavors, are matched only by her passion for fantasy and sci-fi culture.

And it’s one thing to develop and base recipes on a TV series, book, or videogame, it’s another thing entirely when you can visit the world in which your recipes exist. So, because of that, she was conscious of the fact that these dishes needed real-world, easy-to-find ingredients so we could all enjoy them both at the park, and at home.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a cookbook if it didn’t give you the knowledge and knowhow. So, at the back end there’s a handy dietary considerations page and measurement conversion charts to aid you in your culinary quest!

So, next time your hosting a dinner or Star Wars themed party, whip this baby out as you serve some Fried Endorian Tip-Yip or Cavaellin Spice Creams. I’m sure it will garner a toast or two as your satisfied guests raise their Dagobah Slug Slinger’s high in the air in your honor!

May the spires keep you!
