Teacher Denied Request for Obi-Wan Kenobi Name Change

You may remember the radio contest offering to pay $1000 to a listener who would legally change their name to 'Obi-Wan Kenobi'. The Charlotte Observer reports that the process has hit a snag for Jennifer Briggs, a schoolteacher and contest winner.
But with powers no less decisive than Darth Vader's, Durham Clerk of Courts John Carr intends to defeat her quest.
""I hope she gets to change her name to Obi-Wan Kenobi. I think it's a great idea,'' Carr said Wednesday, sarcasm darkening his voice. ""But I'm not going to be the one to do it.''
Briggs, 28, would get $1,000 if she changes her name. The deal was part of a Raleigh radio station's promotion of the new Star Wars movie, which opens next month. She was supposed to collect the cash on Monday, after the paperwork was final.
State law says people can't change their names just because they want to, Carr said. There has to be a ""good and sufficient'' reason for it, according to the statute. And the clerk of courts decides whether that reason is good or sufficient.
After hearing of Carr's decision Wednesday, Briggs said she plans to show up at the courthouse Monday in full Jedi regalia -- robe and lightsabre sword -- to complete her mission.
