Labor Day weekend 2007 was known to some 30,000+ fans and costumers not as the end of summer, but as the weekend Atlanta hosted its 21st annual Dragon*Con.
In attendance this year were "Star Wars" celebrities Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), David Prowse (Darth Vader), Ray Park (Darth Maul), Richard LeParmentier (Admiral Motti), and Matthew Wood (voice of General Grievous).
The "Star Wars" track, known as "Matters of the Force" (MOTF) hosted a number of panels on the galaxy far away. One of the most highly attended panels of the entire convention was the "Celebrating 30 Years" question-and-answer session which showcased the celebrities. Each spoke of their involvement with "Star Wars" as well as touted upcoming projects. Other panels included fan groups such as members of The Jedi Assembly, who taught what was actually involved with all the layers of clothing Jedi wore on screen; The 501st Legion, who of course, spoke on armor and their experiences in working with Lucasfilm and the Rose Bowl Parade; and the Rebel Legion. Other "Star Wars" related sessions included the Prop Challenge, the R2 Builders Group, and a Kids' Hour.
Fan tables also were attended by the above-mentioned groups as well as others such as The Dark Empire and many other sci-fi and fantasy groups.
The Mr. Star Wars Pageant on Saturday night was absolutely hilarious. The final five contestants had the entire audience rolling in the aisles. Unfortunately the Cantina Ball afterwards did not go off as planned, but MOTF staffers assure fans that they are re-working the format and will be back next year with a better venue.
Sunday ushered in the "Star Wars" Charity Auction which netted around $2000 for the American Diabetes Association. Toastmasters Timothy Zahn, Michael Stackpole, Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta broght some wonderful objects to be bidded on, including lunch with Mr. Zahn and Mr. Stackpole, as well as a character named after them in Mr. Anderson's next Dune novel.
Sunday also saw the "Star Wars" Costume Contest where costumers showed off their craft. Such diverse costumes from Jabba the Hutt, to scarred Order 66 Jedi to Robot Chicken.
Dragon*Con may not be just about "Star Wars", but for the past two years, the "Star Wars" costumers has been the largest group in the parade as well as in attendance at the convention. So put on your cardboard "Box Trooper" costume and join the rest of the fans. The next Dragon*Con will be Labor Day weekend 2008.

I sent a check for $1,600.00 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation on Monday. While it's not as much as I hoped for, it's still very much appreciated. They will remain for sale in the store for anybody that still wishes to purchase them. Details after the jump.
