There's a new AP article you might want to check out about the popularity of Wikia sites here on the net. One of the features in Wookieepedia, which has incredible Star Wars knowledge stored up. Here's a clip:
But the unreliability of such a collection has been well documented. The Web-based encyclopedia Wikipedia has grown exponentially since it started in 2001 - along the way inspiring endless debate on the necessity of experts, rigorous editing and annotated research.
No one looking for certain truth turns to a wiki, but that doesn't mean they're not useful, particularly in marveling at the passionate pursuit of knowledge by so many - especially in areas where traditional collections have proved insufficient. It's kind of like watching a mob arrive at consensus.
Wikia.com gathers the gatherers. It lists more than 1,500 of the fastest-growing wikis out there. For example, since starting last year, Wookieepedia has assembled 38,000-plus articles that delve into all matters of "Star Wars." The Luke Skywalker article comes in at more than 18,000 words, or about half the length of "The Great Gatsby."
