In an interview with The Guardian, Miramax boss Harvey Weinstein discusses what happended when George Lucas visited the set of Gangs of New York:

George Lucas visited the set, which includes a cast of thousands and a two- mile-long recreation of downtown Manhattan, "and he just kept wondering why," Harvey recalls. "He said he could have made this in San Francisco, at his place, using Industrial Light & Magic technology".
