The NY Daily News has an article on Star Wars, making money and the overall story:
No film franchise has done better business than "Star Wars." The fifth chapter in the saga opens May 16. Each of the first four ranks among the 15 highest-grossing movies of all time. The series has sold a combined $1.5 billion worth of tickets in the U.S. alone.
But for "Star Wars" creator George Lucas, sequels are about storytelling, not money.
"What brought me back to finish the whole thing off was the question of why ? and how ? Darth Vader became evil," Lucas said in a telephone interview from his home near San Francisco.
"The whole reason for going back and doing the back story on 'Star Wars' is that there is an evolution from this very loving person into something that one would describe as evil. That's the path. Without that, there wouldn't be any prequel, because there wouldn't be any story to tell.
"'Phantom Menace' was done really to determine that Anakin Skywalker was a nice kid with a good heart," Lucas says. "We're not talking here about an evil little monster child."
Lucas says two questions drive "Clones": What happens to Anakin's personality to turn him into Darth Vader? And where's the flaw in his character?
Thanks to the Dark Lord of the Stacks for the news!
