Star Wars Guardian Masterclass

Posted By Chris on October 5, 2011

Following the success of The Anatomy of Star Wars weekend in London earlier this year, another fantastic event is planned for Edinburgh's Film House this November with Gary Kurtz and Sandy Leiberson.

FULL PRESS RELEASE:

Star Wars Masterclass Weekend with Gary Kurtz and Sandy Lieberson

Sci-fi fans will love this - a two-day investigation into one of the most popular films of all time. Gary Kurtz, the producer of Star Wars, and Sandy Lieberson, whose production credits include Blade Runner, will be your hosts

Dates: 12-13 November 2011
Duration: Two days (10am - 5pm)
Location: Filmhouse, 88 Lothian Road, Edinburgh
Price: ?99 (inclusive of VAT)

Star Wars was released in 1977 by 20th Century Fox and went on to become one of the most successful and universally adored films of all time. But what is it that made Star Wars such a successful and exhilarating cinematic experience? Was it down to the film's groundbreaking visual effects? Perhaps the age-old story of good versus evil captured the imagination of its global audience? What role did marketing and merchandising play in influencing its reception?

Now, over two days, Gary Kurtz (producer of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and American Graffiti,) and vice president of 20th Century Fox International Sandy Lieberson (producer credits include Performance and Rita, Sue and Bob Too) will examine the anatomy of Star Wars and offer first-hand insights into the development, production and marketing that made this film a defining moment in the history of cinema.

Paying particular attention to the film's origins and inspirations, script, visual and audio development, special effects, editing, pre- and post-production, marketing and distribution, Gary and Sandy will explore how Star Wars emerged from the mist of 1970s American new wave cinema while offering an expert point of view on the film's enduring legacy.

Profile of Gary Kurtz and Sandy Lieberson

Academy Award-nominated producer Gary Kurtz has been involved in the development and production of some of cinema's most iconic and successful films, which have earned more than $1.5bn at the box office. He has worked with film-makers such as Roger Corman, Monte Hellman, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. His producing credits include Star Wars; The Empire Strikes Back; Dark Crystal; and American Graffiti. Gary participated in the setting up of the world-renowned special effects company Industrial Light and Magic. He has been active in all areas of the film and television industries for the last 50 years.

Sandy Lieberson was president of production at 20th Century Fox, MGM International and Ladd Co (WB). He supervised production of Blade Runner, Alien, Thelma and Louise, and Once Upon A Time In America, and was the producer of Performance, Stars and Bars, Rita, Sue and Bob Too, Swastika and 22 other films and documentaries. Sandy was the founder and chair of Film London and in 2008 was responsible for establishing the groundbreaking Microwave Film Fund for low budget feature films. Sandy is a tutor in the National Film and Television School's producing department and heads up the producing department at Escuela International de Cine and TV Habana, Cuba. He is one of founders and organisers of the Berlin Talent Campus.
