SF Gate Praises Letterman Digital Complex Plans Posted By Thomas on October 13, 2002
A new article from sfgate.com in support of Lucas' new Letterman Digital Center at the Presidio:
The new Letterman Digital Arts Center on the east edge of the Presidio won't change the course of architecture. It won't placate neighbors who don't want it there to begin with.
But the design set to become reality in three years is heartening nonetheless -- because the final product should create a beguiling transition from San Francisco's dense Marina district toward the national park's wild core.
The buildings are designed with almost slavish respect for the heritage of the former military base, while the open space includes a meadow half the size of Yerba Buena Gardens. Best of all, the 23-acre complex is shaped as part of the larger Presidio, not some separate enclave.
That's not easy, since the project centers on four large buildings containing 850,000 square feet of space, a new galaxy in "Star Wars" creator George Lucas' business universe. They'll put $5.8 million annually into the coffers of the Presidio Trust, which must make the 1,168 acres it manages financially self-reliant by 2013.
But to the extent that a weighty corporate presence can be unobtrusive, the approach honed since Lucas won a 1999 competition for the site fits in well.
