John Williams and Yo Yo Ma were at the CostCo in Marina Del Ray this afternoon in support of their new CD, and Doug was lucky enough to attend:
I arrived just before 2:30 and the line was enormous. It basically went 3/4 the length of the store, made a U turn down the last isle and then 3/4 back. I was in it for the two hours (I'd say I was in the middle of the pack), when they finally stopped signing autographs and opted to allow visitors to hurry through and meet the artists.
Two things sucked about it, 1) The amount of Yo-Yo Ma fans (not that I don't respect his work), but it was all about John Williams for me. 2) Many people were getting multiple signatures, when a lot of us were only given about ten seconds to walk by, say hi, and shake hands. I was able to give JW a letter I wrote praising his work, which I was happy to do as well as shake his hand. A CostCo employee handed out pre-signed CD booklets which was great, because towards the end, it didn't look like we'd even be able to see him (them).
It wasn't my drawing of Jar Jar I brought, that Rick McCallum signed at the Star Wars Celebration, but it was still a great thing to remember my meeting with the great John Williams.
Yo-Yo Ma and Williams are playing tomorrow at the Dorthy Chandler Pavilion.
Thanks for the report Doug. You can read more about the CD "Yo Yo Ma Plays the Music of John Williams" by clicking here.
Update: Here's a report from JediRacer who also attended the signing:
Because of past experiences of other SW celebrity signings, I knew I had to get to Costco EARLY. I arrived there at 12:45pm (I had to work half-day). There were about 30 or so people ahead of me in line, which wasn't bad. Some of them were there at 11:00 am when the store opened.
I wasn't sure if they would allow them to sign just anything or only items bought in the store. The policy was you had to purchase at least one CD, and they would sign whatever else. I brought two SW soundtracks with me, and I purchased John Williams' new Olympic music CD.
By the time Mr. Williams and Mr. Ma arrived, the line was LONG. In my opinion, they should have limited the number of items one could have autographed. Some people went way overboard. There were three guys in front of me who must've had twenty items or so each! Although they purchased about 10 CD's each, they also had posters, laserdiscs, sheet music, and even a baseball (?)! You know they were just going to turn around and sell that stuff on eBay.
Anyway, it took about 20 minutes to get to Mr. Williams (including waiting for those selfish "dealer" guys). He seemed really nice and happy to sign my CDs. He signed my "Ultimate Edition" Episode I soundtrack, with the chrome and blue cover, in silver ink and it looks really nice! I was truly in awe when I met him.
I kind of ignored Yo-Yo Ma, although I really respect his work. I had forgotten that he did the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon soundtrack (darn!). I was happy when I left, but I did feel sorry for those towards the end of the line because I knew they weren't going to get to them.
Rebelscum Breast Cancer Awareness Charity Patch Posted By Philip on November 25, 2014: Thanks to everybody that ordered patches. I sent a check for $1,600.00 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation on Monday. While it's not as much as I hoped for, it's still very much appreciated. They will remain for sale in the store for anybody that still wishes to purchase them. Details after the jump.
