Lucas Helps Pitch 2012 Olympics Posted By Joshua on October 30, 2002
George Lucas is trying to get San Francisco the Olympics in 2012. Here's a clip from today's SF Chronicle:
Bay Area Olympic boosters are winging off to Colorado on Thursday for the big weekend showdown with New York, and as one booster told us, "This may be the first time that San Francisco's reputation for being out of step with the rest of America actually plays to our advantage."
The not-too-subtle message being that while we Americans may love America, the rest of the world doesn't -- so the best chance for the United States winning the 2012 Summer Games would be to advance a "world" city like San Francisco rather than a "power" city like New York.
That means the local pitch will lean heavily on "beauty icons" like the Golden Gate Bridge, and on microchips.
Speaking of icons, gold medalists Marion Jones and Michael Johnson will be among the two dozen traveling delegates pitching San Francisco's bid before the U.S. Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs. Meanwhile, George Lucas, Steve Young and actress Joan Chen all appear in the city's video -- along with a special appearance by Robin Williams, who ribs East Coast summers for being "hotter than J-Lo's thong at Carnaval."
