First Glimpse Of Fury

Posted By Paul on June 2, 2007

Acky from the NJOE website just pointed me in the direction of a new story they're reporting.

A German online bookshop has put a cover up on their website for the upcoming Legacy of the Force novel, Fury. Now this could be a fake, or a fairly random mock-up—remember the early version of the Betrayal cover?—but it could equally be a prototype of the real cover.

Now, Fury, the seventh book in the series, isn't due out until November, and some people will no-doubt ask where the cover is for the intervening novel, Inferno, which is due out in August. You'll remember that we got a teasing non-cover with the official "first look" at that book.

The truth may simply be that the "non-cover" was the preview image sent out for Inferno. It's not that they've skipped a cover, just that they withheld the proper cover for Inferno and gave us something else instead back in March—it was implied at the time that the real cover contained heavy spoilers for the "hot" story.

In that case, it would make sense that we'd start to see hints of the equivalent preview image for Fury... well, right now, really. And there's no particular reason why that preview shouldn't be the real cover this time.

What we're shown here is a human figure in black, raising the red lightsaber traditionally associated with Dark Jedi and Sith Lords. The setting, with a large turbine-like structure in a bulkhead behind the figure, looks similar to those used for the covers of Betrayal and, even more noticeably, Exile.

The figure looks male, and relatively dark-haired, so the most obvious candidates are Jacen Solo and Ben Skywalker, though it's hard to be quite certain at this resolution—especially bearing in mind that this may be a mock-up. There's something between the figure's neck and left shoulder and that might be Ben's padawan braid, but it could simply be a shadow underneath a protruding piece of the background architecture. There may also be a diagonal scar across the figure's forehead, something that I don't think we've seen before.

Outside chances include Luke Skywalker, Jaina Solo, Zekk, Jag Fel, and some sort of return-from-the-dead for Anakin Solo.

Or it could just be an early mock-up, or a fake, of course.

We'll bring you more news on this when we get it!

UPDATE: Bonnie from Lucas Online has posted a comment on the coverage of this story at ClubJade, to say that this isn't the real cover for Fury... so, back to square one?

UPDATE #2:

Well, the real cover has now been released and as you can see, it shows Ben Skywalker, and it turns out that we weren't quite wrong the first time. According to LFL editor Sue Rostoni in this thread at StarWars.com, the cover released on the German website represents an early concept stage in the development of the design; they're not quite sure how it was released, but now we know what it was.

A couple of observations: maybe that line behind his shoulder was Ben's padawan braid after all, since the other "shadows" on the backdrop turn out to be darker fittings on the bulkhead, and not such straight-line shapes.

And maybe it's significant that Ben was wielding a red-bladed lightsaber in the prototype—although that could have just been a placeholder, and the blade seems blue now. Also, if it did mean anything, the "red" one could have been meant to be Anakin Solo's lightsaber, which has a purplish blade produced by using a Yuuzhan Vong lambent as a focusing crystal... and which is apparently still sitting like Excalibur in a memorial on Kashyyyk, the setting for the cover of Inferno, also just released, as we reported here the other day.
