C4: John Alvin Original Concept Art

Posted By Mike on September 27, 2007

ARTINSIGHTS GALLERY RELEASES ORIGINAL CONCEPT ART BY CINEMA ARTIST JOHN ALVIN CREATED FOR THE STAR WARS CELEBRATION (C4) POSTER AS PART OF EXCLUSIVE ONE MAN SHOW

Reston, VA - ArtInsights Animation and Film Art Gallery, one of the only three galleries worldwide to represent original art top cinema artist John Alvin, is premiering art used in the making of the official poster for the 30th Anniversary Star Wars Celebration, which sold out completely at C4, as part of a new show featuring original art on October 6th, at an opening of his new one man show. Mr. Alvin will be appearing in person at the opening, which will be from 2 to 6 pm at their gallery in Reston Town Center. There will be new graphite concept and mixed media originals available from film campaigns he worked on, as well as limited editions and interpretive works. In addition to Star Wars, art featuring Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Alien, Predator, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and other films he worked on, will be included in the show. The exhibit will be on display through November 26th.

John Alvin is responsible for some of the most famous movie posters from the last 30 years, including E.T., Blade Runner, The Lion King, and Young Frankenstein, as well as more than 130 other films. He has created art for numerous Star Wars film promotions and events. "Star Wars is such an important part of science fiction film history, the 30th anniversary is a really big deal to fans and collectors." says Michael Barry, co-owner of ArtInsights. "Since John Alvin's 10th anniversary Star Wars poster is one of the most sought after, we feel very fortunate to have art used in creating his official Celebration IV poster." The finished poster was inspired by an iconic scene from "A New Hope", originally released in 1977. ArtInsights has acquired five of the seven concept pieces created.

Mr. Alvin has created the official fine art limited editions for Pirates of the Caribbean, and has obtained exclusive fine art rights to create images from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. He was one of the artists selected by Disney to create editions representing their characters, including Beauty and the Beast, Snow White and Cinderella, and is a featured artist at Disney World and Disneyland. In addition, a new limited edition has just been released in conjunction with the special edition dvd of Blade Runner that will also be in the show.

John Alvin has been working as an illustrative artist in the film industry for over 35 years. He came into prominence by creating the art for the poster for Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles in 1974. He went on to create art for many films including E.T, which won the Hollywood Reporter Key Art Awards grand prize, and is the only movie art honored with the Saturn Award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy Films. He has created more images for Spielberg films than any other single artist, including art the poster art for "Empire of the Sun", "The Color Purple", "Always", "Jurassic Park", and, of course, "E.T". He has also created a lot of specialized work for George Lucas and the "Star Wars" saga. Mr. Alvin's "Star Wars Concert" and "Star Wars Tenth Anniversary" posters are among the most collectible Star Wars art on the market today. Additionally, the Smithsonian Museum exhibited Alvin's "The Phantom of the Paradise" as one of the best posters of the 20th century. John Alvin's art has added him to a short list of cinema art masters whose works have become icons in Hollywood's history.
