Though Celebration 3 has drawn to a close, we still have bits of info to share with you from the presentations. One notable one was ?Effects in Film? by Roger Guyett. Guyett was the man responsible for the Hippogriff in the last Harry Potter film. As he presented his material, fans were blown away by what we saw.
We first saw a shot of Obi-Wan and the Clones in a hangar. Obi-Wan is seen lecturing them with a hologram map next to his starfighter. As the clip was played over and over, you began to see more detail. There were R2 Units rolling around, gunships, clones welding on ships, and more. It was stunning detail for such a brief shot. Guyett showed the original bluescreen shot, animatics, and the various layers on elements.
He followed up by showing Mustafar. We were treated to establishing shots of the volcanic planet that were then broken down into their elements like matte paintings and ?practical elements?. Many of the shots were combinations of models and CG. We were then shown a shot of a geyser of CG lava falling on a bridge. We saw it broken down piece-by-piece and even the original lava simulations in the computer. The next shot was of the Lava River. It flows through a valley and you can see a complex perched on the side of a cliff high above. In the foreground were aliens dipping ?collector arm? poles into the lava and droids flying around assisting them. Finally, we saw shots from the final duel. Most notable in the shot was actual live footage of lava eruptions from Italy. We heard they were shot, but it?s interesting to see them as they were used in the film.
The next series of shots were from the Battle of Kashyyyk. The Wookiee homeworld was modeled after Thailand and parts of China combined together. We were first treated to a look at the CG Wookiee model. Guyett showed us the hairless CG model of the alien. I have to say it reminded me a lot of the Hulk, but a hairless Wookiee is quite a strange sight. Guyett joked it was a ?Mexican Hairless Wookiee?. We were shown the Tarfful model as well as the variants that were different colors to make up the rest of the army. We saw shots of them running, the hair movement tests, and facial expression tests. Next up were battle shots from the trailer, just extended a little more. We saw all the elements layered together for the final shot. Seeing it played over and over allowed the audience to pick out little details like Wookiee flyers in the air, Separatists troop transports, tanks hydroplaning along the water, and a gun droid emerging from the water.
The final scene Guyett showed was quite a shocker. It was one of the very last scenes from the film. It featured the Emperor, a group of clones on full alert, and the charred body of Anakin on a hover-stretcher emerging from a shuttle in a rainstorm on Coruscant. Some of the figures were so small that you couldn?t tell what was going on if you didn?t already spoil yourself, but I was quite surprised that it was shown. The scene was still cool.
That concluded the talk. More to come!
Rebelscum Breast Cancer Awareness Charity Patch Posted By Philip on November 25, 2014: Thanks to everybody that ordered patches. I sent a check for $1,600.00 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation on Monday. While it's not as much as I hoped for, it's still very much appreciated. They will remain for sale in the store for anybody that still wishes to purchase them. Details after the jump.
