Baz Luhrman Appreciative of Lucas Posted By Thomas on July 12, 2002
An article in SFgate.com talks of Baz Luhrman and the allure of Skywalker Ranch and his admiration of Lucas:
Baz Luhrmann, the "Moulin Rouge" director whose "La Boheme" opens at San Francisco's Curran Theatre in October for a six-week run before its Broadway debut, is in town getting the lay of the land. At a welcoming dinner party hosted by producer Carole Shorenstein Hays and her husband, Jeffrey Hays, the Australian repeatedly expressed his gratitude to George Lucas, with whom he'd spent the day at Lucas' Marin County headquarters. Lucas was at dinner with his daughter, Katie (along with Hays' partner, Jimmy Nederlander, the show's executive producer, Noel Staunton, Jo Schuman Silver, Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown, and Kimberly Guilfoyle and Gavin Newsom, to whom noncitizen Luhrmann pledged a vote).
In response to the hostess' post-dinner welcome, Luhrmann recalled spending some time doing post-production work on "Romeo and Juliet" at Lucas' Skywalker Ranch seven years ago. He'd gone there at a time he was particularly worried about the movie, he said, when Hollywood thinkers were telling him, for example, that it might be a good idea if he cut out most of the Shakespearean dialogue.
At the ranch, he said, he found a place to work, a nurturing environment and a way to complete the movie. Returning to the Bay Area, he said, made him feel he'd come full cycle.
Thanks to Fuuufuu for the heads up.
