Lucas Interview on Brazilian Site

Posted By Thomas on July 29, 2002

Guilherme chimes in:

Here is a link to an George Lucas interview (Portuguese) in which he talks about not doing Ep. 7-9, talks about indy4, some "hated" characters like Jar Jar, Ewoks and C3PO.

Also he mention doing movies without real actors (NEVER) and some future work based on something like THX-1138.

Update: as promised earlier, here's the English translation:

George Lucas, the emperor strikes back.

In good mood and talking a lot, the lord of all Star Wars stuff chatted with "SET" in Skylwalker Ranch about digital actors, fans, The Lord of The Rings and, of course, future.

Q: With the Star Wars saga coming to an end, are you working on a new project?
A: No, not yet. I'm still writing Episode 3.

Q: And what can you tell us about Episode 3?
A: Well. Anakin Skywalker will become Darth Vader (laughs).

Q: Since the Phantom Menace, movies with great public appeal like LOTR - which many consider the "Star Wars" of the new generation - were released. How do you see this?
A: You know, I don't think LOTR belongs to the new generation: it belongs to mine! (Laughs) But they're different movies.

Q: But, a good percent of the people got to know LOTR last year and there are inevitable similarities with Star Wars. Was Tolkien a big influence when you wrote the first movie?
A: I read LOTR, but I read tons of mythology books. I guess most of my ideas came from the same source as Tolkien, which was mythology, the idea of a medieval world. So I tried to catch many different influences. But I do love LOTR and I think it's a good book and movie

Q: Did you have to change the way of telling the story to this new generation?
A: To tell you the truth I didn't. My objective is still the same as when I started: shoot a big movie, 12 hour long in six parts. What I pictured with Star Wars is a long movie with the essence of movie theater series of the 30's and that's the way I try to keep the story like.

Q: Do you supervise the development of all the off-movie stories? After all, Star Wars exists in books, comics.
A: You know, I try not to think about that. I have my own world in movies and I follow it. Of course that the people who expand this universe work for me, but I can't follow up all that they produce.

Q: Can you quote any good story other than the movies?
A: No, I don't think so. (laughs).

Q: After The Phantom Menace, many fans were hard on their critics. They complained about Jar Jar Binks and Anakin Skywalker. In AOTC, Jar Jar was reduced as a mere appearance and Anakin is way different than he was in Episode 1.
A: This happens because when I'm telling a story, I must be faithful to it. In television it is possible to react to the viewers' response by changing characters, but I cannot afford than on the big screen! Jar Jar, for instance, has had his day already. But he is not one of the main characters. C-3PO e R2-D2 appear much less in the Empire Strikes back than in Star Wars (A New Rope), but this doesn't mean I was responding to a certain viewers group. And fans didn't start to hate C-3PO until The Empire Strikes Back..

Q: Hate?
A: Yes! Back then I even heard that he was the worst character ever created in movie history (laughs). Then, in Return of the Jedi the fans started to hate the ewoks, every one disliked them. In The Phantom Menace, it was Jar Jar. Truth is than a poll taken outside movie theaters pointed that, for kids under 12 years old Jar Jar was, between many non human characters, the favorite. And here is a funny one: for people older than 12, he was the second favorite, losing only to Darth Maul.

Q: Of course this only applies to hardcore fans...
A: Yes. We're talking about thousands of people in the internet (laughs), but it's still a small group compared to 80 millions that watched the movie. Not to mention that there are other researches like, the ones taken by the toy industry, and most of them confirms that Jar Jar was one of the public favorite characters.

Q: And which one is your favorite?
A: (Emphatic) I don't have one, I like them all. I can't see this in a different way. I love Jar Jar, C-3PO, and the ewoks (laughs). And Jango Fett!

Q: But, isn't it frustrating to work hard on creating a character and see a group, even if it is a small one, having strong negative feelings about it?
A: No... What can I do? Every one is entitled to an opinion, and if I expose my ideas in a movie I must accept that.

Q: How do you see the future of the movie? Have you wondered how it would be doing movies without actors?
A: In fact, I started doing movies that had no actors - pure cinema. I liked the experience. But if you refer to virtual actors, that does not exist. It's going to take at least a thousand years until the debut of a digital actor. We already have digital stunts for our actors, but we need the actors for them to exist. The digital character demands a huge effort from the actor that is on the set with the rest of the team, he gives his voice and lends his corporal expression. What few people know is that the animators are also actors, they take the same classes and use the same techniques. When someone takes a picture of an actor on stage, it doesn't mean that we can get rid of him. It is possible to simulate a human being, and in AOTC we have impressive "copies". But they are still people acting and working. People!

Q: Do you still think about shooting episodes 7, 8 and 9?
A: No. Not gonna happen. I want to do other stuff. These movies take a decade to be ready. I'll be over 60 years old when the present movies are done and I do not plan on doing Star Wars till my eighties.

Q: In which direction do you pretend to follow?
A: I have many ideas on movies and TV series. Pretty much some smaller stuff. Something like THX-1138, where I have begun.

Q: At which production point is Indiana Jones 4?
A: I'm working on the story, and we'll hire a screenplay writer that is starting to work on the movie in July. But it will come out. I'm doing my part, which is to prepare the script. Harrison wants to do it, so does Steven, and everyone is opening a space in their agenda for 2004, and I guess till then, the script should be ready (laughs).

Q: Is it true than you sued the US government for copyright violation over the Star Wars brand?
A: Yes. They had the space defense program, but that was not what they called it - in fact, that name came from the media. And as long as there was a risk of myself losing the copyrights, I sue the government. That's how it works: you are obliged to take legal action to keep your rights. When the case got to Supreme Court, the judge said the government could use the name, but I would not lose my copyright.

Q: Aren't you concerned about having the name of you creation related to a military program?
A: No way! I'd rather have them building an useless system than spending billions on building bombs (laughs).

A big thanks to Guilherme Godoy for translating the article.
