Visit to Skywalker Ranch
Posted By Joshua on May 28, 1999
Ribbit sends along this report after meeting George Lucas and visiting the Ranch a week ago while doing some MTV stuff. Kinda makes me jealous. :) Anyhow, here's the report: I feel that I must give you the ENTIRE story, so here goes. I was able to get tickets to the MTV sponsored event through my brother, who is an up and coming young actor. We flew from Los Angeles into Oakland, and stayed with a friend of my brother's who is also a young actor. Within minutes of our limo's arrival, I mustered up enough strength to put clothes on (I cannot stress how awful i felt this day). Well, I was beginning to feel decent, right in time for the screening. We pull into Skywalker Ranch, they give us our necklace/passes and wave us on to the building with the theater. We get there and they hurry us out because THEY ALREADY STARTED THE MOVIE!!! Apparently, we missed out on about an hour of pre-movie festivities. Our limo driver didn't tell us we were late, our schedule said the movie started 15 minutes after we got there, but we were powerless. We race into the theater so not to miss any more of the movie. Needless to say we were upset, but we were so involved in what was happening in the movie, we couldn't really complain to anyone. The movie ends, we all really liked it. They usher everyone out of the theater. As I walk out, I'm in young actor hell. I can't turn anywhere without seeing Elijah Wood, or the Rushmore kid, or somebody else. We are handed bags of goodies like action figures, light sabers, and t-shirts. We all make our way to an outside area set up with tables, drinks, and appetizers. The first person I notice is Lucas. I didn't really know what to expect from this MTV event, but barely expected to get a glimpse of Lucas. Well I was wrong. He was pretty much just standing around talking to whoever would come up to him. Well, first job, getting an autograph. Thinking pretty soon Lucas will be hoarded, I blatantly walk up and ask if he'll sign my pass. I was so excited he signed it, i didn't think i'd really be able to interact with him much more. Well, as time passes, I notice the young actor crowd is so into themselves, nobody is crowding Lucas. My brother's friend and I (both movie fans, not hot young actors) walk up to Lucas and begin chatting. My bro's friend asks him questions about the movie (is Palpatine the Emperor? Lucas's answer: no comment, but your on the right track), and I point out one of my favorite parts (Jabba knocking a tiny animal off a ledge). We talk about effects, which theaters are ideal to see Phantom in, and other stuff I can't remember cause I was feaking out. As people begin to filter away, an 11 year old girl named Katie begins obessessing on my brother and the other teen stars we were with. It turns out to be Lucas's daughter. She seems to be getting a kick out of hanging out with us. We take pictures with her, and Lucas. Well, feeling we milked this party for all its worth, we decided to take the tour of the main house (after the tour, they pretty much guide you to your limos to leave, so we made sure we were ready). The main house is built to look old and Victorian, but it's built specifically to Lucas's wanting. They show us the research library, various eating areas, lots of original paintings (norman rockwell), and coolest of all, a prop shelf. Lightsabers, Indiana Jones's diary, other various cool stuff. Well at the end of the tour, we were pretty much the last group of people to be hanging out. Who comes through the front door? Lucas with his daughter. Katie, being such a fan of us, talks to us some more. We quiz her on the artist of the painting in the room we were in. She dosen't know, Lucas walks over, whispers the answer in her ear. By this time, I half expected Lucas to be walking around in his boxers. Well Katie asks if she can walk us to our limo, but asks her dad to pick her up. So were walking back as Lucas drives past us to go wait for us to get to our limo. We get there say goodbye to his daughter, goodbye to Lucas, and that was pretty much it. As I'm sure you can tell, missing part of the movie was not a problem anymore. I never thought we'd have that much interaction with Lucas. Anyways, a great time. Ribbit PS: My brother's friend was talking to Lucas about Ep's 2 and 3 regarding directors. Lucas said he's created a monster and he'll be directing the next two installments. Thought you should know. . .
