Topher Grace Discusses His 85 Minute Prequel Edit

Posted By Mike on April 27, 2012

Last month we reported that actor Topher Grace had re-edited Episodes I, II, and III of the Star Wars saga in order to create a single 85-minute movie. In order to do so, plot points were tweaked, added, or cut out. He even branched out to use music from The Clone Wars and deleted scenes when necessary. This film was then screened for a small audience in Hollywood to quite positive reviews.

Grace is currently in New York for the Tribeca Film Festival in support of his new film The Giant Mechanical Man. Mike Ryan of the Huffington Post caught up with Topher for an interview and the talk turned from the film he's supporting to the three films he edited last month. Grace explains that editing the prequels was simply an exercise in order to ultimately help him become a better actor. There was no intent to make fun of the prequels and, down the road, he hopes to do similar edits with other franchises of which he is a fan. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

"What I was trying to do ... by the way, I did want to learn how to edit, in the way that directors sometimes take acting classes. They're not doing it to become actors, they're doing it to understand the medium they're in better, from another angle. And that's why I did that. And, by the way, it has helped my acting -- editing something that didn't have me in it. There's this expression that it's written three times: during the script, when you're filming it and when you're editing it. And I believe that's wrong. I think it's written once, in editing -- and everything is clay for that. And I wanted to learn about it -- I thought it would be neat. It's like learning to play the piano and I need a lot of clay. And I thought if I did one movie out of these three ... whatever. Anyway, I was thrilled with the reviews that we got and I've been telling everyone that we're going to open huge [laughs]. We're going to have a big opening weekend."

While it would be interesting to see the edited film for ourselves, don't get your hopes up. Topher does not plan on releasing the film, which will most likely keep his project on LFL's good side. Click here for the full read.
