TPM Closes in on ID4 Record Posted By Stephen on May 28, 1999
John Goldsmith brought this information to our attenion. It's from the Hollywood Reporter.
Racking up North American boxoffice grosses faster than a Tatooine podracer, 20th Century Fox's "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace" is on track to hit the $200 million mark roughly a week earlier than the previous holder of that record -- the studio's own "Independence Day." The first episode in the "Star Wars" saga beat Universal's "Lost World: Jurassic Park" by one day as it reached the $100 million mark in five days and will be crossing the $150 million today -- in a record 10 days. "Phantom Menace's" record surpasses "Independence Day," which took 12 days to reach the $150 million mark. Through Thursday night, the prequel has grossed close to $140 million. To reach the $200 million mark in a scorching 13 days, the picture will have to gross about $60 million over the four-day holiday weekend, which most industry observers feel is not beyond the grasp of the Force. However, if "Phantom" grosses in the $50 million area over the four-day frame and doesn't reach the $200 million mark until Wednesday, it will still be a record at 15 days -- six fewer days than it took "ID4."
