SW.com Introduces Their Clone Cards

Posted By Mike on April 16, 2011

Starwars.com rolls out their virtual Star Wars: The Clone Wars trading cards following the conclusion of Season 3...

"With the third season of The Clone Wars now behind us, fans can still enjoy the Star Wars trading card experience, if only virtually. Clone Cards, the digital trading cards designed to preserve that retro trading card feel and introduced at the beginning of Season 3, has just completed its first full set, complete with stickers, a title card, checklist cards, and a puzzle -- just like the old Topps sets from decades ago (see our original announcement for the Clone Cards series here).

"Most of the imagery was heavily inspired by the original Empire Strikes Back Topps collector cards," says StarWars.com lead designer Craig Drake. "Especially their ink imperfections and texture of the old card stock. Every step was taken to emulate the tangible experience of that classic '80s card set."

Another aspect of the old '80s card sets that fans may remember are the puzzles that could be constructed from the backs of the cards or stickers themselves. Usually, several card backs in a set could be combined to create a single large image of a scene from the movie. The Clone Cards have now recreated this experience for Clone Wars fans. "It's our hope fans will download and print out each of the six pieces to assemble the puzzle," says Drake. "They'll be rewarded with a StarWars.com exclusive image of the Republic Commandos!"
