Lucasfilm, Copyrights, and the Internet Posted By Scott on May 3, 1999
You may have seen an article about Lucasfilm sending out a form letter to ISP's telling them to police their customer's sites for copyright infringements. A big question many have been asking is "What does this mean for the fan sites?" Honestly, I don't think much....if you play your cards right.
Lucasfilm has ALWAYS been very up front about what they do and don't want done on fan sites. They have been very generous in letting us all use images, sounds, and video clips from the film and they have told us in the past that it is OK to use them if you're not profiting from it. I think the purpose of this letter is to get the legal stuff going to keep people from going into theaters, videotaping Episode I, and posting it on the net. I personally think they should do everything in their power to keep that from happening. The only way to see Episode I is on the big screen.
I have not spoken with anyone from Lucasfilm on this, but I think these are relatively safe conclusions to make. We'll keep you posted, as always.
