Is their anything dourkier than a bunch of guys making a Star Wars fan film?
Oh, you bet. But its better when they are having a lot of fun making their fan film. The Gamers has a very simple premise: four guys (actually five but he is off on a date) playing Dungeons and Dragons (they don't actually name it..you know, to avoid the dreaded "c" word - copyright). As the gamers play, the camera shows the world the DM has created.
So does it work? For the most part. Many of the jokes in the game are pretty funny, but only if you understand them. This movie is aimed squarely at the RPG fans who have gone through many of these same situations. For all others, the idea of a character killing another character by accident might seem a bit odd.
There is one complaint however. Because Star Wars (and other sci fi films) are most often copied in fan films, the special effects and makeup in non-SF films tend to be less than thrilling (Batman: Dead End obviously an exception). If you plan to make a non-Star Wars fan film, remember to research your special effects and makeup. The suspension of disbelief is very easy to lose.
