The Reverse Padawan Braid Theory

Posted By Anthony on November 8, 2001

Will writes in attempting to clear up Hayden's reverse padawan braid from the Breathing trailer.

"I just read you news item that pointed out anakin dancing braid, a common post production fix if you "cross the line" is to flip one of the images (as long as there are no tell tale signs(text in the bg is a common one)). If you flip anakins image back the way it was both amidala and anakin are looking in the same direction to right of screen, not at each other. I refer to shot 2.

If you look at the attached image (sorry about the hand drawn stuff) I'll try and explain what I mean by crossing the line as simply as possible.

First up the purple arrows are showing which way the 'actors' are looking (in this case at each other), if we were shooting this as a scene of a movie, we would set up our cameras on only one side of the actors. In this case 'side b' (the blue and red dotted lines are supposed to be where the cameras are looking. If we switched to the 'side a' (the green camera line) the actor on the right side of the image would be looking the same way as the actor on the right side of the image. Very confusing if our actors are supposed to be looking/talking to each other.

Hope that explains what I mean without being confusing. That ends my lecture on "scene geography 101."

Will, I think you've managed to confuse us even more. ;) Thanks for writing in.

Update: Will sends in the following clearing up the confusion:

The Action Axis or Crossing the Line

Instead of trying to explain it with words, I'll try explain it with real world examples.

Take a look at the following diagram - Lets pretend it of a scene with Padme and Anakin talking to each other.

Now take a look at what we would see if we shot thru Camera A

Notice Anakin is looking to the left of the frame, if you look at the diagram and visualise what Camera A is seeing you would see this shot that Anakin is looking in the right direction (He isn't - the shot has just been flipped).

Take a look at what Camera B is seeing.

First off lets pretend that the backgrounds are the same and this is the same scene. Padme is looking towards the right of frame (please refer diagram), the shots should now match and we have Anakin and Padme talking to one another.

Hold up, lets take a look a what Camera C is seeing.

This is the way this scene was originally shot (and should appear in the final film). Look at this shot and the one above, both Anakin and Padme are looking in the same direction. The shot sticks out like a sore thumb, if it was the same scene it doesn't look like they are looking into each other eyes. Remember this is a love story (AOTC - love that name) they will be looking into each others eyes.

The diagram is much better. Thanks for clarifying!

Update: Logan adds some comments.

"Though the arguments are good about the camera angles being changed to fix the blooper, something that i noticed that i'm sure others did to (besides the background), is Padme's hair. In the first shot, her hair is down and curly, in the shot in dispute, it is up in leia style buns with ribbons in it. Though there is still a mistake with the switching of the braid's side, the shots being compared are entirely different.

Thanks to everyone else who noticed and wrote in as well.

Final final update: CrypticPress chimes in with the last words on the subject.

Logan points out that the two shots are from different scenes, suggesting the argument about flipping the shot is invalid, whereas this is EXACTLY the point the others are trying to make. They are trying to point out that the shot of Anakin was flipped so that IN THE TEASER it looks good juxtaposed with the shot of Padme. Most likely the shot will not be flipped in the movie itself (but again, these are all still theories.) One will then say, "why flip the Anakin shot instead of the Padme shot, since there's nothing in it that will automatically give the flip away?" This is because the "Western Eye" naturally views images left to right, top to bottom, so having Padme on the left with eyes facing right was ideal. Others will say, "why not start the teaser with Anakin facing left and THEN the shot of Padme flipped?" Again just a theory but I'm guessing they wanted to start the teaser with a recognizable character from TPM.

Anyway, I just wanted to point out that the "crossing the line" theory is still perfectly valid; even though the two shots are from different scenes, they were dited together so that the viewers eyes naturally follow Padme's directly to Anakin's in the next shot, providing a proper flow for the teaser.
