Rumor: Star Wars Comics License Returning To Marvel?

Posted By Eric on December 20, 2012

When Disney bought Lucasfilm, fans realized that the deal put publisher Dark Horse Comics, the holder of the Star Wars comics license, in an awkward position. For decades, D.C. Comics and rival Marvel Comics -- which is owned by Disney -- have been the two largest publishers in the business, but Dark Horse has held its own and benefited immensely from being the publisher of Star Wars comics. However, it seems unlikely that they will continue to do so now that their competitor's parent company owns the intellectual property. With that in mind, the blog Blue Sky Disney reports that "The Suits in the know have determined that no new contracts will be given to Dark Horse after the current ones expire. So all new projects after 2013 will be handled internally by Marvel." The report continues:

"It's not known yet if titles will be worked into the regular line up, or will Marvel create a special branch of the company that deals with Star Wars. It'll take a couple of years for the old deals to work there course, but the stories that Dark Horse have coming down the pipeline will be the last. And you can expect anything new from Marvel dealing with Star Wars to arrive around 2015."

We still don't have confirmation of this Blue Sky Disney story, and it's doubtful that Lucasfilm will provide it any time soon. Brian Wood, who is writing the new Dark Horse series Star Wars, tweeted the following today:

UPDATE: Randy Stradley, editor of Dark Horse's Star Wars comics, posted the following message on one of the Dark Horse forum's discussion threads last night: "As I mentioned in another thread, don't believe everything you read on the Internet. Yodazone has the right attitude." That last sentence was in response to another poster's quote: "One random blog entry with no reliable links and it's being posted everywhere on the net."
