Clone Wars: Comics, Novel, RPG

Posted By Paul on May 10, 2008

There have been a few updates on Clone Wars tie-ins in recent days.

Firstly, regular source Eddie from fan site Once Upon A Galaxy has e-mailed to point out a couple of books now listed on Amazon's Canadian site.

Wizards of the Coast will have a Clone Wars Campaign Guide for the Star Wars role-playing game, with a release-date of January 20th 2009.

There's also a page up for the first in the series of Clone Wars graphic novels from Dark Horse Comics, The Shipyards of Doom (but beware spoilers!).

The big news here is that this story is written by Henry Gillroy, lead writer on the upcoming TV show, with art by the Fillbach Brothers, veterans of the Eisner-nominated Clone Wars Adventures comic series. There's a plot summary up on the site, so follow the link if you want to know more.

It has a release date of 25th September, which sounds like it's meant to tie in with the TV series rather than the movie, and it will be followed by additional volumes on a "quarterly" schedule - so expect another one for Christmas?

A little checking around the internet also found a post on the DarkHorse.com message-boards by Randy Stradley, giving the (provisional) title of this series as Clone Wars Quarterly.

We already knew that these were coming, of course. These quarterly books will run alongside a regular monthly Clone Wars comic, and will be produced in the format used by Clone Wars Adventures and recent X-wing and Tales of the Jedi reprint anthologies. That means a smaller page-size than a normal comic-book, but a sizeable page-count: Clone Wars Adventures volumes have had 96 pages each, and some of the anthologies have been significantly larger.

Next, friend of TF.N Nick Fel lets us know that Amazon UK's page for the up-coming Karen Traviss novel has updated its title to SW: Clone Wars. I was already pretty confident that it was the novellization of the animated movie, and this seems to add more support to that.

Lastly, a quick note on the children's books. There's been a big announcement on these recently, and I'm planning on writing a separate update to summarize and organize what we know, but in the mean time, Zee Zee from UK-based fansite Star Wars Books has contacted us with a couple of new pieces of information.

Firstly, there's a news story on the Publishers' Weekly website. This adds a few new details, and confirms a few more, notably that the subsequent tie-in group for the TV series, which we first saw a mention of last month, will likely consist of five additional books.

Lastly, the "unapproved" cover art on the Amazon UK website, which we spotted last week, has disappeared.

That's all for now. We'll bring you more news when we get it.

UPDATE: Zee Zee from Star Wars Books has contacted us again, to point out that the Amazon.ca page for "Shipyards of Doom" has removed the plot spoilers from the summary. However, you can still read them in this thread (beware spoilers!) on TF.N's "Jedi Council" message boards.

Also, as Jay pointed out in this story, the latest editorial in the DarkHorse.com Star Wars site has repeated Randy Stradley's announcement about Clone Wars Quarterly in a more formal context. The first volume is also included in the comics solicitations for August.
