CCG Archive: The Emperor and Bionic Hand Posted By Josh on February 26, 2004
Emperor Palpatine first debuted in the Death Star II expansion as one of the game's first Ultra-Rares. This met with mixed feelings in the Playing Community, thus prompting Decipher to make a less rare version of the Empire's Sith Leader and releasing it in Reflections 2. Although not nearly as useful as its Ultra-Rare counterpart, the persona did allow decks and cards that required the persona to be used by many more players. In Virtual Set #6, an alternate Virtual Text was made available to the players, courtesy of 2002 Origins Winner, Mike Gemme, making Reflection 2's The Emperor much more of a viable option:
Never deploys or moves to a site opponent occupies (except the Senate). Once per turn, may lose 1 Force to target a character present at same site (free if in a battle): character is defense value -4 until end of turn. OR Draw destiny. If destiny +1 > defense value, character lost. At opponent's Senate, politics = 4 and game text may not be canceled.
One of the charms of the Star Wars CCG is how it incorporates everything you see in the movies into a usable card. One of those cards was Luke's Bionic Hand. The original version was usable, but more for its destiny than its gametext. So for the current Virtual Set, the Player's Committee released an upgrade for Luke's mechanical appendage:
Deploy on Luke. Adds 2 to power and immunity to attrition. While at a battleground, you may exchange one card from your hand with any interrupt in your Lost Pile. Lost if Disarmed.
The Star Wars CCG lives on through the efforts of the Star Wars CCG Player's Committee. Please visit their official site or e-mail Josh "Red 84" Radke to learn how to play or more about Virtual Cards and what the PC is all about.
